Hi all, great to finally be back in Hong Kong! I was at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting last week in Davos, a mountainous, wintery… oh wait. “Wintery” it was decidedly not; some days it reached five degrees above zero, melting the snow and clearing the streets in a way unseen in the middle of winter in years. If anything, the nearly snowless mountains and Australian bushfires underscored the urgency of the climate crisis for the Davos set (with Greta Thunberg in the building).
We launched a micro-site for the HKEX delegation to Davos with several updates - sometimes including slideshows and videos - published each day. It was our second year to test the idea of a special events blog, with traffic and media coverage jumping significantly from 2019. Early returns indicate it’s an effective way to keep stakeholders up to date, particularly at an event that can seem so out-of-touch.
This week I’m going to direct you to a couple of other newsletters that have crossed my desk; the first is Mike Hanley’s newsletter on LinkedIn, which is focused on content for communicators; the second, by Anu Hariharan, is on tech, but I’ve included one of her articles below on the rapid growth of WeChat, the de facto interface to the internet for hundreds of millions of people in China. (If you aren’t familiar with WeChat or think it’s a WhatsApp-like chat app, then please check out a detailed breakdown WeChat that I wrote for 9to5Mac last year). I know Mike personally and was sent Anu’s newsletter by a contact, but I think both look promising.
Lastly, social media is now a crucial component of corporate communications, so check out the lead story this week on social media analytics, what they mean, and how to analyze and interpret data. It’s a lengthy piece that will hopefully answer some questions.
With Coronavirus, the death of Kobe Bryant, and Australian bushfires, 2020 is already off to a rocky start. Here’s hoping you and yours are safe and sound.
